Illustration, Data Visualization, Mural Work

Visualization of research conducted by Dr. Akshay Sharma for his Caboodle! study at the Center for Sexuality and Health Disparities at the University of Michigan. The Caboodle! study conducted research about HIV and STI testing in participants who identified as men who have sex with men.
For this project, I wanted to center the thoughts and feelings of the participants of the research study as opposed to showcasing the quantitative data. The mental and emotional aspects of this study were just as (if not more) important than the statistics recorded. HIV and STI testing are heavily stigmatized in our society, and it takes a heavier toll on those communities most affected. With that in mind, I incorporated words, phrases, and quotes from the participants of the study, which served as inspiration for my illustrations. As a nod to the Caboodle! study itself, I deconstructed the its logo and used those shapes as vignettes for each drawing.

Displayed at Zingerman's Greyline, Abracadabra Jewelry Store, and Bløm Meadworks in Ann Arbor, Michigan in late April/early May 2021. Made in collaboration with Dr. Akshay Sharma, Tanaka Chavanduka, Renee Pitter, and the Center for Sexuality and Health Disparities at the University of Michigan.
